How do I get started?

Families start our process by completing our online private educator placement application. A placement counselor will email the family upon receipt of the application to set up a time for a consultation that will ensure we have an accurate understanding of both the position the family is looking to fill, as well as the type of candidate they are most interested in considering. A registration fee is taken at that time.

Does BNC provide support in creating the written agreement between the family and the private educator?

Absolutely. We have created a family/private educator agreement template that outlines all aspects of the placement, including the base schedule, core job responsibilities, compensation, and paid time off. We’re here for guidance on how to create a competitive, fair agreement for both parties.

What benefits are common for families to offer a long-term private educator?

Paid time off is the most common benefit, including paid vacation days, holidays, and personal/sick days. Candidates are counting on their base weekly salary 52 weeks a year. For part-time hires, the total number of paid days off is prorated based on the private educator’s typical work schedule. According to the Massachusetts Domestic Worker’s Bill of Rights, the accrual of unpaid time off and job-protected unpaid leave is required of all families employing private educators for more than 16 hours per week.

Monthly health insurance stipends, T passes, cell phone reimbursement, tuition reimbursement, and health club memberships are also common in full-time compensation packages. Merit-based bonuses may also be earned throughout the year.

Who pays the private educator’s salary and what about taxes?

Once hired by a BNC family, the private educator becomes their household employee. The family pays the private educator directly for hours worked. We advise our clients to use a payroll company for simplicity and ease. A payroll company will make sure the private educator’s paycheck reflects all applicable tax deductions and will provide the family with the necessary tax documents at the end of the year. GTM Payroll Services offers a free consultation to explain taxes and payroll and to provide support. The family is responsible for certain taxes as a household employer. These payroll taxes consist of FUTA (federal unemployment tax), SUTA (state unemployment tax), and one half of FICA (social security and Medicare tax). Worker’s Compensation is legally required in the state of Massachusetts, as well.

What if things don’t work out with our first private educator?

We are proud that while most of our long term private educators sign a one-year minimum contract, many stay with their families for years, and when their service is no longer needed, they confidently return to us for new placements. Yet, if for some reason, things don’t work out with your first placement, we provide you with a 180 day replacement if you hired a long-term private educator. For school-year only private educators, you pay ahead quarterly and we can help you with finding a new educator if you part ways with your placed educator.

How many candidates will you have for us to consider?

We hand-select candidates for each specific search, so many families only end up seeing between one and four candidates before making a decision. It is common for our families to make a decision after seeing only one or two candidates!

However, we keep working with a family until we find the right match.

How quickly can you find a private educator for our family?

We recommend that each family give themselves 4-8 weeks of lead time to find a private educator. Depending on the difficulty and requirements of the search, it may take more than 8 weeks to find the perfect person.

What qualifications do you require for private educators?

Qualifications are mutually decided upon during our family consult and are dependent upon the needs of the family. Some common qualifications are a degree in education, experience working in a school setting or with a homeschooling family, tutoring, and experience/training for specific learning styles such as Montessori or Waldorf methods.

Do you place school-year/short term private educators?

Yes, we do place school-year/short term private educators. In these times of uncertainty, please feel free to call first to discuss your scheduling needs before filling out our application.

What do private educators typically earn?

Presently, depending on the position’s responsibilities, we are seeing a general range of $35-50/hr for private educators in the Boston market.

Do you offer screening services if I find a private educator on my own?

Yes! We offer a variety of screening services. If you have identified a candidate independently and would like our support to determine the prospective private educator’s suitability, we can help. Safeguard your family by asking us to do an in-depth background check, face-to-face interviewing, reference checking and contract preparation. What does your background check include?

Our background check covers: verification of college degree, a comprehensive criminal history, criminal history checks in each county that the nanny has resided in, federal criminal record checks in each state the nanny has resided in, the sex offender registry, the national security watch list, a social security number validation trace, and a driving record check (if applicable).
